Documentation

Description:

The GUMCAD STI Surveillance System is the new name for the Genitourinary Medicine Clinic Activity Dataset (GUMCAD). It is a mandatory reporting system providing data on sexual health services and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) diagnoses, from all commissioned Level 3 and Level 2 sexual health services in England. It is an electronic, pseudo-anonymised patient-level dataset reported by over 500 services.

GUMCAD data are primarily collected to monitor trends in STI diagnoses, to identify inequalities in sexual health, and to measure the success or impact of service delivery.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) co-ordinates and manages this quarterly data collection, processing, storage and analysis on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Data are:

  • reported quarterly to service providers and local authority commissioners
  • used for the chlamydia detection rate (1 of only 3 sexual health indicators on DHSC’s Public Health Outcomes Framework)
  • published annually as official statistics.

About this change

This release builds on the establishment of GUMCADv2, which was a major improvement in the national surveillance of STIs and is now an internationally unique dataset used to inform sexual health policy decisions and evaluate interventions. The new version of the dataset should be referred to as the GUMCAD STI Surveillance System.

The change introduces data items to capture critical sexual health information, such as:

  • condom use
  • recreational and sexualised drug use
  • usage of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
  • outcomes of partner notification.

Following a successful pilot, the changes are now ready to be rolled out nationally. In addition, the dataset has been updated to allow the use of SNOMED CT.
